MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

JANUARY 14, 2020

 

 

 

 

The Mayor Pro Tem and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Pro Tem Godwin and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and City Clerk Whitney Moon acted as clerk for the meeting.

 

Mayor Pro Tem presented the minutes of the council work session held on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Hill and a second by Council Member Taunton, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Mayor Pro Tem Godwin presented the minutes of the regular council meeting held on Tuesday, December 10, 2019. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Brown and second by Council Member Carr, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Mayor Pro Tem Godwin presented the minutes of the special council meeting held on Friday, December 20, 2019. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Hill and second by Council Member Brown, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Item 1: The possibility of donating the Girl Scout Hut to the Historical Society with the stipulation that they remove what they want by a set date was discussed. Council Member Taunton made a motion to donate the Girl Scout Hut to the Historical Society with the stipulation that they remove what they want by February 7, 2020, Council Member Hill made a second. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

 

Item 2: A donation to the THS Cheerleader fundraiser was discussed. Council Member Hill made a motion to suspend the rules, seconded by Council Member Carr. Upon a roll call vote, the motion was approved by a unanimous vote. Council Member Taunton abstained from voting since his daughter is a cheerleader. Council Member Brown made a motion to donate $200 to the Cheerleaders, seconded by Council Member Carr. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

 

Item 3: Mayor Pro Tem Godwin read a Proclamation for Hal and Paula Miller’s 50th wedding anniversary. Council Member Hill made a motion to adopt the proclamation, seconded by Council Member Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

 

Item 4: Mayor Pro Tem’s Reports: Wanted to get a Finance Committee meeting set up once the Mayor is back. Mayor Pro Tem Godwin discussed the need for adequate compensation for the superintendent of utilities. This was looked into based on the job requirements, results that the City of Tallassee has seen in the last 3 years, and comparable salaries for this position in other cities in the state of similar size. Council Member Hill made a motion to suspend the rules, seconded by Council Member Taunton. Upon a roll call vote, the motion was approved by a unanimous vote. Council Member Hill made a motion to increase the salary of the superintendent of utilities from $25,500 to $50,500 per year, effective for the next payroll, seconded by Council Member Brown. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

 

Item 5: Council Reports: Council Members Taunton had nothing to report. Council Member Hill wanted to recognize the Scouts for joining us, they are working on a merit badge. Council Member Carr said that there would be a Martin Luther King march on January 20 at 10AM at the First United Methodist Church followed by a Martin Luther King program at Jerusalem Baptist Church at 10:30AM. Council Member Brown expressed his thanks to council members and everyone else for the thoughts and prayers and for checking on him. Council Member Brown also asked for continued thoughts and prayers for Council Member Stough and Mayor Hammock.

 

Item 6: There being no further business before the Council, upon a motion made by Council Member Hill and a second by Council Member Taunton, all Council Members present voted to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 6:12 p.m.
