MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

OCTOBER 22, 2019

 

 

 

 

The Mayor Pro Tem and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Pro Tem Godwin and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and City Clerk Whitney Moon acted as clerk for the meeting.

 

Mayor Pro Tem presented the minutes of the council work session held on Tuesday, October 8, 2019. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Wilson and a second by Council Member Brown, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Mayor Pro Tem Godwin presented the minutes of the regular council meeting held on Tuesday, October 8, 2019. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Taunton and second by Council Member Carr, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Item 1: Resolution concerning the soccer field grant was discussed. Leslie York briefly discussed the grant stating that it’s a 50/50 match. Council Member Taunton made a motion to approve the Resolution, Council Member Brown made a second. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously. Resolution 2019-627 was adopted.

 

Item 2: Consider the request from the Fire Department concerning a SAFER Grant application. David Rogers went over all that was involved in applying for this grant. Any grant matches are already in the budget. Council Member Wilson requested that David Rogers get numbers for the Council and to present this again at that point.

 

Item 3: Request from the Library Board concerning the recommendation of appointment of Margaret Miller to the Board was considered. Council Member Taunton made a motion to approve the request, seconded by Council Member Wilson. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

 

Item 4: Council Member Stough gave an update on the Public Safety Committee meeting that was held on October 8, 2019. Council Member Stough said that take home vehicles for the Police Department was discussed and also the working relationship between the Police Department, Fire Department, and Haynes ambulance. He stated that all issues are good.

 

Item 5: Request for take home vehicles for the Police Department was discussed. Council Member Wilson made a motion to approve the request. Council Member Brown made a second. Upon a vote, the motion was passed unanimously effective immediately.

 

Item 6: Proclamation concerning Confederate Monument Dedication Day was mentioned. Council Member Stough stated that he did not feel that the City of Tallassee should endorse this. There was no motion, the item was not considered.

 

Item 7: The use of the Recreation Department’s bleacher’s for the reenactment was considered. Fred Hughey stated they would be used for about 3 days. There was concern about damaging the bleachers and Council Member Taunton suggested that Mr. Hughey take pictures of the bleachers before and after using them in the future. Council Member Taunton made a motion to approve this, seconded by Council Member Carr. Upon a vote, the motion passed with a majority vote. Council Member Wilson and Council Member Stough voted Nay.

 

Item 8: Mayor Pro Tem’s Reports: Nothing to report.

 

Item 9: Council Reports: Council Members Taunton, Carr, Wilson, and Brown had nothing to report. Council Member Stough wanted to explain that he voted no for the use of the Recreation Department’s bleachers because they have been damaged in the past.

 

Item 10: There being no further business before the Council, upon a motion made by Council Member Taunton and a second by Council Member Wilson, all Council Members present voted to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 6:18 p.m.
