MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

MARCH 9, 2021

 

 

 

 

The Mayor and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Hammock and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and Whitney Pitchford as secretary for the meeting.

 

Mayor Hammock presented the minutes of the council work session held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Brown and second by Council Member Carr, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Mayor Hammock presented the minutes of the regular council meeting held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Hall and second by Council Member Carr, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Item 1: Public Hearing Notice-Rezoning 71 South Tallassee Drive and the lot beside Britt Veterinary from R1 to GB. Andy Coker said the Planning Commission makes the recommendation to rezone these properties. There was no opposition at the Planning Commission meeting in December. There were no comments from anyone. Councilmember Huey made a motion to close the Public Hearing seconded by Councilmember Carr. The motion was approved unanimously. On motion of Councilmember Godwin and second of Councilmember Huey, the council unanimously approved the rezoning of these properties.

 

Item 2: Building Inspector Andy Coker discussed the Resolution of Demolition of vacant, abandoned and dilapidated properties through CDBG Grant. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to adopt the Resolution seconded by Councilmember Hall. Upon a vote the motion passed unanimously.

 

Item 3: Mayor Hammock discussed the TRA appointment in the work session and is checking into the bylaws to see how many members the TRA will need.

 

Item 4: Mayor Hammock reported on a number of additional items.

 

  1. The Mayor discussed the 772 abatement for Farmers Furniture. The Mayor will let them know that we are interested but want to see costs as they continue if possible.
  2. Sidewalk sale this Saturday from 8 to 1 in Downtown Tallassee.
  3. Anti-littering signs are ordered.
  4. Team up for cleanup will be in April. Waiting on a date for that.
  5. Grove Station is under construction in Downtown Tallassee. 19 Sistrunk.
  6. One of the weather sirens is not working after being hit by lightning. Estimate is $11,722. Council agreed that we should get it fixed.
  7. Tallassee Talk podcast will feature Councilmember Hall this week.
  8. The Fire Department has had 91 calls so far this year. Lots of structure fires in vacant buildings. The Demolition grant should help with this.

 

Item 7: Several councilmembers made reports.

  1. Councilmember Hall wanted to thank the city employees for filling pot holes and adding speed bumps.
  2. Councilmember Godwin wanted to thank to Andy Coker for all of his hard work on the CDBG Grant.
  3. Councilmember Huey expressed his thanks to Troy Wallace for replacing the speed bumps on Lilly Avenue.

 

Item 8: There being no further business before the council, and upon motion of Councilmember Godwin and second of Councilmember Hall, the council unanimously voted to adjourn the meeting at 6:45 p.m.
