MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

JULY 28, 2020

 

 

 

 

The Mayor and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Hammock and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and City Clerk Whitney Moon acted as clerk for the meeting.

 

Mayor Hammock presented the minutes of the council work session held on Tuesday, July 21, 2020. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Taunton and second by Council Member Brown, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Mayor Hammock presented the minutes of the regular council meeting held on Tuesday, July 21, 2020. There were no additions or changes. Upon motion of Council Member Hill and second by Council Member Taunton, the minutes were approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Item 1: The Tallaweka Tank Project was discussed in the work session. Council Member Hill made a motion to amend the budget and take $20,650 from the infrastructure account to pay for the tank to use during this project, seconded by Council Member Godwin. The motion was approved by a unanimous vote.

 

Item 2: Mayor’s Reports.

 

Stephen Webster discussed the possibility of blocking off James Street beside Tiger Paw back to Sistrunk Street every 3rd Saturday night of the month from 6PM-11PM starting in August. His plans are to host cook-offs and/or have a small band in the park on those nights. He spoke to the Chief of Police and the Fire Chief and he will also hire security depending on each event. Stephen hopes this will bring business to the downtown area. Council Member Hill made a motion to approve the closure of James Street beside Tiger Paw back to Sistrunk Street every 3rd Saturday of the month starting in August unless there is something else that comes up, seconded by Council Member Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Mayor Hammock got an estimate on the roof for the Rec Department of $50,000-$60,000 and the chemical that this would use has to be put on by a certified person. Council Member Taunton should have another estimate by the next meeting.

Discussed giving the audio equipment to the school in the work session. Council Member Taunton made a motion to donate the audio equipment to Southside, seconded by Council Member Hill. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Discussed the bond information and our options during the work session. Council Member Godwin made a motion to accept a check at closing for over $500,000 to be used on capital improvements, seconded by Council Member Hill. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

 

Item 9: Council Reports:

Council Member Taunton has no report.

Council Member Hill wanted to thank the city workers, Mayor, and Council Member Godwin for their work on the bond restructure.

Council Member Carr had no report.

Council Member Wilson had no report.

Council Member Brown had no report.

Council Member Godwin wanted to set up a finance committee meeting for the beginning of August.

Council Member Stough no report.

 

Item 10: There being no further business before the Council, upon a motion made by Council Member Hill and a second by Council Member Carr, all Council Members present voted to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 6:06 p.m.
