MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

AUGUST 8, 2023

 

 

 

 

The Mayor and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Hill and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and Whitney Pitchford as secretary for the meeting.

 

Approval of minutes: On motion of Councilmember Hughey and a second by Councilmember Hall, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the July 25, 2023 work session. On motion of Councilmember Hughey and a second by Councilmember Hall, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the July 25, 2023 regular city council meeting.

Item 1. The 10U baseball team was recognized as State Champs!

Item 2: The Girls 8U All Stars were recognized for going to the World Series!

Item 3: Moved to the August 22nd meeting.

Item 4: The swim team’s district and state winners were recognized.

Item 5: The reappointment of Judge Benson was discussed. Councilmember Hall made a motion to reappoint Judge Benson, seconded by Councilmember Godwin. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously and Resolution 2023-237 was approved.

Item 6: The Ordinance regarding updating building codes was introduced.

Item 7: Moving money from different funds to purchase a slope mover for the street department was discussed. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to put the slope mower out for bid, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to suspend the rules, seconded by Councilmember Hall. Upon a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to move $90,000 from 03-518-5249 to 01-506-5263 and $25,000 from 01-513-5040 to 01-506-5263, seconded by Councilmember Hall. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Mayor’s Reports:

  • Armory reopening is October 21st at 10AM. They will have the boy scouts there, a rock wall and other fun activities.
  • August 16th we will have a budget draft.
  • Police Department are asking for permission to apply for a no match K9 grant. Councilmember Brown made a motion to approve the Police Department applying for the K9 grant, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Council Reports

Ward 1: There are employment opportunities in the street department. Councilmember Taunton will be volunteering his time off to help the street department.

Ward 2: Thank you to the guys that we do have, you are doing a great job!

Ward 4: Thanks to our street department. Great job!

Ward 5: Street Department-you guys are awesome. We appreciate you.

Ward 6: Echoing what everyone has said about the street department. Thanks to Eric for his hard work updating things, thanks to Mayor, Kayla, and Whitney-the financials look great!

Ward 7: Troy & James get on top of anything mentioned-great job!

There being no further business before the council, and upon motion of Councilmember Taunton and a second by Councilmember Carr, all councilmembers present voted to adjourn the meeting at 6:27 p.m.
