MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

FEBRUARY 27, 2024

 

 

 

 

The Mayor and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Hill and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and Whitney Pitchford as secretary for the meeting.

 

Approval of minutes: On motion of Councilmember Hughey and a second by Councilmember Carr, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the February 13, 2024 work session. On motion of Councilmember Hughey and a second by Councilmember Brown, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the February 13, 2024 regular city council meeting.

Item 1. Brad Barron asked permission to shoot fireworks for the Little League opening day March 9, 2024. He invited Mayor and Councilmembers to join.  Councilmember Taunton made a motion to approve fireworks for the Little League opening day March 9, 2024, seconded by Councilmember Hall. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Item 2: The 5K fundraiser for the Samson Strong Foundation was discussed. This will be in April, the same day as the sidewalk sale. Councilmember Brown made a motion to approve the 5K fundraiser for the Samson Strong Foundation, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Item 3: Gaines Todd from Musco Lighting addressed the Council regarding lighting at the baseball and softball fields. Gaines handed out packets to Mayor and Council members. Council will review and discuss at the finance meeting March 12th.

Mayor’s Reports:

  • Reminder about Statement of Economic Interest due April 30th.
  • Appointment of Acting Municipal Court Judge. Councilmember Hughey made a motion to approve this, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.
  • Tallassee PSAP and Police Department Equipment Upgrades-cameras, generator upgrade and surge protector. $50,000 from Elmore County. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to accept the $50,000 grant from Elmore County, seconded by Councilmember Hall. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.
  • Thanks to the police officers for their swift recovery of a weapon at the football field.
  • CDBG housing teardowns should be happening within the next 2 months.
  • CARPDC will be here March 12th to discuss needs assessments for grants looking into the future-everyone is invited.
  • Finance committee meeting March 12th at 5PM
  • Speed bumps-had several complaints. Going forward, councilmembers need to get signatures of everyone in the neighborhood agreeing to the speed bump and then talk to the Mayor about the potential speed bumps.

Council Reports

  • Ward 2: Thanks Chief, traffic is slowing down. Check downtown out if you haven’t, it looks great!
  • Ward 5: Speed bumps in East Tallassee-big problem. Speeding, lets continue to be proactive.
  • Ward 6: Finance Meeting March 12th at 5PM.
  • Ward 7: N. Wesson Bridge update. Jr. Carleton offered in kind services, said the bridge was structurally sound. Tallapoosa County has a source to get the boards that we will need. James and Troy will work with the county.

There being no further business before the council, and upon motion of Councilmember Hall and a second by Councilmember Taunton, all councilmembers present voted to adjourn the meeting at 6:28 p.m.
