MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

MARCH 14, 2023

 

 

 

 

The Mayor and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Hill and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and Whitney Pitchford as secretary for the meeting.

 

Approval of minutes: On motion of Councilmember Carr and a second by Councilmember Godwin, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the February 28, 2023 work session. On motion of Councilmember Brown and a second by Councilmember Hughey, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the February 28, 2023 regular city council meeting.

Item 1. Removed from agenda.

Item 2. A Proclamation for Arbor Day March 18, 2023 was discussed. Councilmember Taunton made a motion to approve the Proclamation for Arbor Day, seconded by Councilmember Brown. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Item 3. Beth Dunn asked for the City to vacate a road close to Laurel Street, stating that the City had already vacated the road previously but that it wasn’t recorded. City Attorney John Smith said that if the City has already vacated the roadway then we cannot vacate it again. John Smith said that Mrs. Dunn would have to get her own attorney for advice. The Council suggested the Mrs. Dunn give the City Clerk a copy of the deed and the City Clerk can research but there is an hourly fee.

Item 4. Chief Buce presented two life saving awards to Lt. Manning and Andre Amaya. Thanks for all of your hard work!

Mayor’s Reports:

  1. The Council discussed a cash offer for the Hotel property and we are not interested at this time.
  2. Approval of amendment #1 to engineer agreement. This money is coming from the Bond. Councilmember Taunton made a motion to approve amendment #1, seconded by Councilmember Godwin. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.
  3. Previously we cancelled the March 28th meeting thinking it was the week of spring break. It is not the same week. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to have the March 28 meeting, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.
  4. Thanks to the Police Department for all of their hard work.
  5. River Hills update-reached out & gave a few options to the owner.
  6. Congrats to Chief Buce for completing his training!

Council Reports

Ward 2. Thanks to Chief Buce and the officers, we are grateful.

Ward 4. Getting complaints about the narrow entrance to Noble. James Garner said this is the State and he will reach out to them.

Ward 6: What’s the status on the proposal to rezone? Mayor-the agenda for the Planning Commission was already set for March. This is on the agenda for April.

There being no further business before the council, and upon motion of Councilmember Taunton and a second by Councilmember Brown, all councilmembers present voted to adjourn the meeting at 6:22 p.m.
