MINUTES OF A REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING

OF THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE

CITY OF TALLASSEE, ALABAMA

NOVEMBER 14, 2023

 

 

 

 

The Mayor and the City Council of the City of Tallassee, Alabama convened in regular session on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tallassee Municipal Complex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Hill and the following were recorded as present:

John Smith was present as city attorney and Whitney Pitchford as secretary for the meeting.

 

Approval of minutes: On motion of Councilmember Hughey and a second by Councilmember Taunton, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the October 24, 2023 work session. On motion of Councilmember Hughey and a second by Councilmember Taunton, all councilmembers present voted to approve the minutes of the October 24, 2023 regular city council meeting.

Item 1. A Proclamation for National Home Health and Hospice Month was discussed and approved.

Item 2: Updating the City Park hours was discussed. Councilmember Taunton made a motion to set all City Park hours as sunrise to sunset, seconded by Councilmember Carr. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Item 3: An Ordinance regarding motorized vehicles on public streets was discussed. Councilmember Brown made a motion to adopt the ordinance regarding motorized vehicles on public streets, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously. Ordinance 2023-690 was adopted.

Item 4: The Recreation Department Head was introduced.

Mayor’s Reports:

  • James Garner gave an update on current projects.
  • Generator bid results. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to accept the $60,000 generator bid only from Thompson Power Systems, seconded by Councilmember Carr. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.
  • We received an “A” rating from S&P. Great job on the finances Whitney and Kayla.
  • December 1st-Christmas tree lighting. Councilmembers please attend.
  • December 2nd-Christmas parade.
  • December 8th at 6PM-Senior Center Christmas party-Mayor and Councilmembers are invited.
  • Happy Thanksgiving! Our next meeting will be December 12th.
  • Veteran’s Program was great!
  • Downtown Project is going great. Sidewalks on N. Ann, Jeff is getting prices to take those down. Asphalt is being poured today.
  • Councilmember Godwin made a motion to suspend the rules, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously. Councilmember Godwin made a motion to increase 01-514-5219 to $10,000, seconded by Councilmember Taunton. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

Council Reports

  • Ward 1: Christmas lights look great! Thanks to James and Troy for always helping. Thanks to the Garden Club, the parks look great!
  • Ward 2: Downtown is looking great!
  • Ward 3: Demolition of houses update? Talked to Eric, the houses that we have on the list keep getting sold.
  • Ward 6: Councilmember Godwin made a motion to allow Mayor to negotiate with Nextsite, seconded by Councilmember Brown. Upon a vote, the motion passed unanimously.

There being no further business before the council, and upon motion of Councilmember Taunton and a second by Councilmember Carr, all councilmembers present voted to adjourn the meeting at 6:17 p.m.
